An Eagle's Eye - View on Personal Point Murder
Case
- Delhi Times, Times
of India
NEW DELHI :
The personal point murder case accused Subhash Gupta had contracted
the services of a private detective agency headed by Kumwar Vikram
Singh to verify the antecedents of Sujata Saha before she was killed
on July 6. In March 1996, a seven member team of Lancers Network
Ltd. followed Sujata closely for nearly four months, until her death.
Sleuth Vikram Singh, in an interview to Delhi Times, were part of
his deposition on Monday to the court of metropolitan magistrate
N K Gupta.
How did you meet subhash Gupta? On March 20, 1996
Subhash Gupta came to my
office. He said his brother Anil Gupta wanted to marry Sujata Saha,
an executive of Personal Point. Since the Guptas belonged to a conservative
family, they may not have been the right choice for the sahas who
were Bengalis. The Gupta family was quite unhappy about such an
engagement. However, since Anil was determined to marry Sujata,
Subhash decided to engage a well known detectives agency to avoid
future problems.
Did Subhash tell you about his plan to murder the girl?
He never told me of any such plan. He was not satisfied with our
normal procedure of collecting data for matrimonial purpose. He
insisted on a detailed inquiry. He was ready to pay us any amount.
Initially, we conducted an inquiry for 10 days and told him that
Sujata was good natured and his brother could possibly marry her.
But he was not satisfied. He said he was apprehensive that the girl
had as affair with Dr. Sunil Kaul, Owner of Personal Point Then
we investigated for another 15 days. He was still not satisfied.
By now, I got curious about Subhash. I started asking him about
his intentions. Soon I realised he was lying. He himself was interested
in the girl. When I grilled him, he confessed he was in love with
her. On his request , my team collected more information about the
girl. On July 5, a day before the murder, he asked me to give him
a photograph of Sujata. He told me to withdraw my investigation
team for July 6. When I asked him why , he said it was
Sujata‘s birthday on July6 and he was going to meet her in
a special way, so the investigators should discontinue their prowl.
The next day, we heard the girl was missing and Dr. Kaul murdered.
Was it a one sided infatuation? We found that
Sujata was not interested in him. Subhash was frustrated. He said
he had taken a lot of interest in the expansion of Dr. Kaul’s
business, because Sujata was involved in the expansion projects.
He also told me that he was that he was negotiating with Dr. Kaul
to open a fitness centre in Mumbai and post Sujata there so that
he could marry her.
Was Subhash serious about marrying her? He was
obsessed with Sujata. When I tried to dissuade him, he said his
wife would not pose any problems for he had entered into an “arrangement”
with her. His attraction for the girl was fatal. He told me he had
a terrible desire to have the girl by any means. He was ready to
do anything for her, but the girl would not even accompany him for
dinner.
Why did Subhash invest money in Personal Point? Was there
any enmity with Dr. Kaul over financial matters? Subhash
told me he had invested Rs.25 lakh in Personal Point and that Dr.
Kaul had returned him his money with 36 percent interest. Dr. Kaul
wanted him to invest again. Subhash said Mr. Kaul had a good business
acumen but the former was taking a lot of interest in the company
just for Sujata.
Some say Sujata was a girl of lax morals. What was your
finding? According to our investigations, Sujata was a
nice woman-no boyfriend, no bad habits. She was quite reticent,
Subhash suspected she had an affair with Dr. Kaul. We investigated
this angle. We found no evidence which could substantiate that they
had an affair. Sujata was a committed employee. She was deeply involved
with the company’s expansion programme. But she never met
Dr. Kaul in the office for more than five minutes. Subhash believed
that one of the reasons for Sujata’s indifference to his advance
was her proximity to Dr. Kaul.
